Support for Windows 10 is coming to an end soon. In this article, we explore when it’s happening, what the options are when it reaches end of life, how you can prepare for it, and the benefits of Windows 11.

When is Windows 10 support ending?

On October 14, 2025, Microsoft will officially end support for Windows 10.  This means the operating system will no longer receive security updates, technical assistance, or software updates from Microsoft. While your Windows 10 devices will continue to function, the absence of these critical updates could expose your systems to security vulnerabilities and compliance issues.

What are the options after Windows 10 reaches end of life?

After Windows 10 reaches end of life, several options are available to you.  The best course of action will depend on your current hardware, budget, and timeline.

  1. Upgrade to Windows 11: Microsoft recommends transitioning to Windows 11 for enhanced security, productivity, and access to the latest features. This upgrade can be straightforward if your current hardware meets the system requirements.
  2. Purchase Extended Security Updates (ESUs): For organisations needing more time to transition, ESUs are available for Windows 10 in 12-month increments for up to three years after the EOL date.  This is a paid subscription service that provides critical security updates.
  3. Invest in New Hardware: If your existing devices do not meet Windows 11’s hardware requirements, consider investing in new PCs that come pre-installed with Windows 11. Modern hardware will ensure compatibility and provide a better user experience.

How to prepare for Windows 10 end of life: a step-by-step guide

Taking a structured approach is essential to ensure the transition goes smoothly.

1        Assess Your Current Infrastructure
  • Conduct a comprehensive inventory of all devices running Windows 10.
  • Evaluate hardware specifications to determine compatibility with Windows 11.

2       Develop a Migration Plan
  • Prioritise devices for upgrade based on criticality and compatibility.
  • Set timelines for upgrading compatible devices and replacing those that are not.

3        Backup Important Data
  • Ensure all essential data is backed up to prevent loss during the transition.

4       Test Applications and Hardware
  • Verify that all business-critical applications and peripherals are compatible with Windows 11.

5       Educate and Train Employees
  • Provide training sessions to familiarise staff with new features and interfaces in Windows 11.

6       Implement the Upgrade
  • Begin the rollout of Windows 11 on compatible devices.
  • For devices not meeting requirements, plan for replacement or consider ESUs as a temporary measure.

7        Monitor and Support
  • Continuously monitor systems post-upgrade for any issues.
  • Offer ongoing support to employees during the transition period.

What are the benefits of upgrading from Windows 10 to Windows 11?

Windows 11 offers a more modern, refined, and streamlined experience than Windows 10. Enhanced security is a key feature, along with better multitasking tools, a cleaner interface and improved performance.

Windows 11’s focus on efficiency, productivity and security brings benefits for business users. The new Snap Groups and Snap Layouts features offer the ability to organise multiple windows quickly. It’s easier to separate work and personal tasks with enhanced Virtual Desktops. Additionally, hybrid and remote functionality is improved with cloud integration with OneDrive and Microsoft 365 enhancing accessibility across devices, and Microsoft Teams integration in the taskbar, which makes communication easier, supporting quick meetings and collaboration.

Avoiding the shock of EOL devices

An operating system going end of life should not be a surprise to an organisation, as long as they have a trusted partner to manage the IT estate and provide lifecycle replacement. All managed service clients with OryxAlign receive Lifecycle Replacement Management as part of the service. This enables the business to adequately plan and budget for the upgrades or replacements. This is done through:

  1. Clear Asset Management
  2. Establishing the agreed replacement cycle, typically 3-5 years.
  3. Forward thinking planning of devices, discussed at Quarterly Business Reviews.
  4. Budget planning for the IT estate lifecycle.
