The challenge

The digital era has exponentially increased demand for data storage and management. London desperately needs reliable, secure, and efficient data services as a bustling financial and tech hub.

TClarke was appointed to build a four-hall, state-of-the-art data centre in London. Subsequently, OryxAlign was chosen to provide the networking equipment and manage the ICT installation.

The challenge was the project's scale (100,000 sq. ft / 9,300 sq. m) with a 50MW power capacity. In addition, this was a prestigious project for one of the UK's leading data centre operators. The build needed to run smoothly as there were plans to extend the number of halls if successful.

As a result, all the contractors on the project needed data centre expertise and real-world experience. Talent selection was going to be crucial to the project's success.

The solution

Everyone's goal was to create a facility capable of handling high data loads while maintaining top-tier security standards, reducing energy consumption, and contributing positively to the environment.

Our Professional Services team met with TClarke and their client to fully understand the design and select engineers with the relevant expertise.

We have a team of technicians who work exclusively on data centre projects. As a result, we were able to be proactive on network solutions, making recommendations that both TClarke and their client greatly appreciated.

Robert Norman, Senior Technical Project Manager at OryxAlign, commented, “I’m proud of the team that worked on this project. James and Dan stepped up, and it’s always great to get positive feedback from respected clients. Our DC experience shone through.”

Specifications can change in large construction projects, so all suppliers must always be flexible. We adopted an agile Prince2 methodology, enabling us to respond effectively when the work was transferred from the first floor to the ground floor.

The benefits

Our work with other DC projects resulted in greater efficiency in project completion, and our advice was based on real-world experience. Some of our advice has been implemented on other TClarke projects.

Networking is crucial to a data centre’s operations. It enables the communication and exchange of data between different systems and components within the building and with external entities.

Networking impacts Data Exchange, Scalability, Redundancy, and Reliability, as well as Load Balancing, Security, and Virtualisation.

The new data centre has provided a reliable, secure, and environmentally friendly data solution for businesses in London, demonstrating the significant benefits of well-designed and well-managed centres in today’s digital age.

"OryxAlign worked well on this project, and we’re happy to work with them again on future networking contracts. We need confidence when we sub-contract work, and they give us the peace of mind that everything will run smoothly."
