PSTN switch off
Discover when your business phone line will be switched off
The switch-off has already started and will be gradually rolled out. It's expected to be completed by January 2027.
However, the date when your local copper network is switched off will depend on your office postcode. It may happen in your area before January.
Enter your postcode in the form, and we'll send you an email with the date.
You must take proactive steps now to ensure a seamless transition to the newer VoIP or fibre-optic networks.
What is the PSTN network?
PSTN is the traditional landline phone system that uses copper wires to transmit voice calls. It's been the backbone of telephone communication for decades, connecting homes and businesses across the UK. BT has decided to switch it off in favour of more modern technologies. They will also switch off ADSL and EFM lines*.
What will happen if I do nothing?
If you do nothing, your landline phone service will eventually stop working as BT switches off the old copper network. This means you'll lose the ability to make and receive calls through your traditional landline phone.
What are the alternatives?
Alternatives include Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services, mobile phones, and fibre-optic broadband for internet-based communication. VoIP allows you to make calls over the internet, while mobile phones provide wireless communication. Fibre-optic broadband offers high-speed internet, often bundled with VoIP services.

PSTN is the traditional landline telephone network that uses copper wires to transmit voice calls.
ADSL is a type of broadband internet connection that uses copper infrastructure to deliver high-speed internet access. It operates over the PSTN but provides internet connectivity rather than voice services.
EFM is another type of broadband internet connection. It differs from ADSL because it typically requires more copper pairs and offers symmetric upload and download speeds.
